Willa was rescued from Wilson County last fall by Triangle Beagle Rescue. She settled into a loving foster home and was learning to trust. However, she was quite skittish and had a tendency to dart out the door. Unfortunately, she managed to escape twice from her foster home and had to be recovered by Beagle Recovery and Tracking Team, Ltd (BRATT) & SOS Lost Pet Recovery both times. Eventually, she moved to a new foster home and began to flourish. In the beginning of December, she was adopted by a couple who already had another beagle for her to pal around with, and she packed her beagle bags and moved to Georgia. Shortly after her adoption, Willa once again made a dash for freedom and went on the loose.

An army of volunteers helped with Willa’s rescue efforts

BRATT and SOS Lost Pet Recovery worked tirelessly with volunteers in the area to try to trap her once again, using a cage trap. This proved to be more challenging as she became very wary of the trap, having been caught twice before. She lingered in the area, sometimes appearing and then disappearing for days, only to return again, leaving many images on trail cameras over the course of months.

Volunteers kept an eye on Willa’s movements using a trail camera

At the beginning of March, Kevin Pence traveled to Georgia with a Missy trap and spent a week baiting it while observing Willa cautiously approaching and entering the trap but not going in far enough to set it off. Kevin returned to Georgia in mid-March equipped with a drop net. After a few days of Willa cautiously investigating this new addition to her surroundings, she reappeared one night, showing interest in the food under the net trap. When she was just about to take a bite of the food in the middle of the trap area, the net was dropped, and Kevin was able to secure her. After 107 days on the run, Willa was finally captured by the BRATT and SOS Lost Pet Recovery in Brunswick, GA.

Watch the moment Willa was captured!

This operation was intricate, involving several volunteers monitoring trail cameras and baiting traps, multiple trips to Brunswick, GA and the use of three types of traps. A very special thanks to BRATT NC and SOS Lost Pet Recovery as well as our awesome team of volunteers for their dedication in the safe capture of Willa.
